Baby milk: filling nutritional needs or marketing niches?

Baby milk powder: fill nutritional needs or marketing niches?

The baby formula aisle at the grocery store tends to store a lot of options. In addition to the different brands of pastels and buckets, there are special formulations – some for reducing exhalation, gas or cramps. Over the past decade or so, the company has introduced recipes for children leaving bottles.

“Your face is a set of chaos, they look very similar, when are you going to use a label, or from one tag to switch to another, or indeed to stop using these labels, and provide your child with food,” the New York City public health researcher Jennifer wave meilan, says he recently analyzed the children’s beverage grocery store aisle. Her findings were published last month in the journal preventive medicine.

The abundance of choices reflects the tendency of parents to raise their youngest family members. There is plenty of scientific evidence that what children eat in the first few years provides the basis for physical and brain development for the rest of their lives.

But the children don’t know how important their diet is. So parents feel anxious when introducing new foods. “For many parents, from breastfeeding or infant formula milk powder is transferred to whole milk powder is terrible, it seems to be a big change,” says the American academy of pediatrics doctor association President Steven abramoff.

Formula makers say this is where baby milk comes from. Baby milk is sold to picky eaters who are thought to be familiar with their departure but are more mature in breast milk or formula. Infant and young child nutrition committee chairman Mardi Mountford, said in an e-mailed statement. “the priority for infants and young children can drink baby, for older infants and young children made a significant contribution to the nutrition intake.” The American council on infant nutrition is an association that includes gerber products and three other formula manufacturers.

But abrams says an anxious parent may not realize that these baby milk is usually more expensive and less nutritious than full-fat milk. “I don’t think they’re particularly harmful, but they’re not necessary, they’re certainly not designed and managed for the use of babies.”

Manufacturers are still keen to pursue the market. According to the university of Connecticut, manufacturers spent $16 million promoting infant formula in 2015, compared with $9 million for infant formula. In two recent annual reports for 2014 and 2015, nutritionists at medtronic, an Enfagrow infant formula company, said growth in “grown milk” in the us and Canada was strong.

We talked to Pomeranz about the products she found. The length and clarity of our session editing.

What is baby milk powder and how are these products different from baby formula?

This is actually a difficult product category. When we first started this project, it took several months to determine the names of these things, because there were so many names, that European words were different from the words used here.

No matter what the product is called follow-on formula, follow-on formula milk or growth, all of these transition formula contain similar ingredients: milk powder, corn syrup solids and other sweeteners, vegetable oil and sodium. Infant formula also contains milk powder and corn syrup solids, but the FDA strictly regulates the nutritional status of all infant formula at 12 months.

Without these nutrients, most baby formula contains more sugar, fat and sodium.

Why do you look at the baby milk label?

In addition to standardizing the ingredients in infant formula, the FDA has set standards for baby labeling products. The manufacturer must include a specific nutrition group and a statement “in accordance with the instructions of the doctor” that they can only make certain statements about infant formula on the packaging.

Once the formula is applied to children over 12 months, these rules do not apply, so it makes sense to study the 17 child milk labels that can be used in the study.

In most cases, infant formula is difficult to distinguish between infant formula on the shelf. They have similar colors and expressions. But baby milk is usually cheaper, and lower prices mean that parents may mistakenly buy products for their babies.

Do you have any Suggestions for these recipes?

In my opinion, these companies have created a false feeding period, they are full of this new product. Now we are increasing the consumption of reprocessed foods that did not exist before.

But to standardize products that will be on the market, it will help specify a standard name for them so that parents know what they want, she said. It will eliminate some confusion by requiring the label to make it clear that baby drinks are not suitable for babies.

Parents and pediatricians are also well advised to encourage testing before giving their children a drink. These transitional preparations are usually not recommended by pediatricians, given that most young children do well in food, water and milk
